Why Aussies Speak Funny!

Your fluency and pronunciation in English is important for communication. If you can speak like a native, you are likely to make more friends, secure my job prospects and feel more confident in general. In this blog post, I’ll tell you the two key language features you need to speak English like an English native speaker.

Why is it important to have good pronunciation and rhythm?

Good pronunciation simply means you can communicate well it also helps with networking. If you are hard to understand, people will be less likely to want to talk with you. Knowing few words but with better pronunciation is better than doing a lot of words. It doesn’t make you feel good if you say a word and the listening asks you to repeat it. Or worse, if you are in a group of people, and you want to join in the conversation, but you are worried about what it will sound like or what people with think. I genuinely feel for you. And I am a big believer in diversity and multi-culturalism. So, it is my mission to empower people with the knowledge and tools they need speak English well.

How to improve pronunciation?

How many sounds are there in the English language? Five? 26? Wrong!!! Don’t feel bad if you got that wrong.  Most people don’t know this. In fact, a lot of English language teachers don’t know it either. There are 44 sounds in the English language. To keep it simple, we have 24 consonants and 20 vowels. Once you have mastered these sounds then you are ready to go. There are plenty of good software available including, Turner English Pronunciation Practice App, that can help you to discover and eliminate your issues.

What else do I need to know?

In addition to the 44 sounds, there are two skills you absolutely must know to speak like a native. Watch this 10-minute lesson on “Why Aussies Are So Hard to Understand?” This video will explain what is really going on when we speak English. It will introduce you a uniquely soft and short sound, the schwa. In addition, if you are still speaking one word at a time, it is time to stop that right now. You need to be familiar with the concepts of ‘tone units’ in our speech. You may already be using them. But if not, and you have read this far, then you need to start today. A the end of the video, if you stay to the end of the video, you will have a few phrases that you can use today, to help you make more friends.
