Program Overview

The English4IELTS program at Turner English College is a full-time course designed to equip students with the skills, strategies, and confidence required to achieve their desired IELTS band score. Combining in-class instruction, independent study, and digital learning, this program addresses all four IELTS macro-skills — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking — while integrating grammar, vocabulary, and test-taking strategies. The student-centred, task-based, and genre-based teaching approach is supported by modern educational technologies and authentic materials.

Course Structure per Unit

  • Writing Unit
    • Task 1: Visual analysis (graphs, tables, maps, processes)
    • Task 2: Essay writing (opinion, discussion, problem-solution)
    • Strategies: Structure, coherence, lexical resource, grammar accuracy
    • Practice: Timed writing, peer feedback, Moodle assignments
  • Reading Unit
    • Focus on academic texts from journals, newspapers, reports
    • Question types: MCQs, T/F/NG, sentence completion, matching headings, flowchart/diagram label completion
    • Skills: Skimming, scanning, inference, vocabulary-in-context
    • Tools: Moodle tests and discussion forums
  • Listening Unit
    • 4 sections covering social and academic contexts
    • Question types: multiple choice, form/note/table completion, map labelling
    • Skills: Predicting, note-taking, identifying details and gist
    • Integration with online practice and group listening tasks
  • Speaking Unit
    • Part 1: Personal questions
    • Part 2: 1-2 minute speech with preparation
    • Part 3: Abstract discussion
    • Focus: Fluency, coherence, pronunciation, lexical resource, grammatical range
    • Practice: In-class mock interviews, Moodle recordings, group critiques
  • Grammar and Vocabulary
    • Grammar aligned to proficiency level (Beginner to Advanced)
    • Vocabulary: Thematic and academic word lists, collocations, paraphrasing
    • Integrated with writing and speaking outputs, Moodle practice
  • Online Learning Component (optional)
    • 5 hours weekly on Moodle including grammar, writing walkthroughs, recorded speaking with peer feedback, timed listening and reading tasks, and vocabulary development with instant feedback

    • Weekly planning and self-evaluation

Assessment Overview

  • Formative assessments: weekly writing, speaking tasks, and participation
  • Summative assessments: every 5 weeks under IELTS mock test conditions

  • Final progress report with consultation

Entry Requirements

Average IELTS score of Band 4 with no skill less than 3.5.
